Who are we?

At Fostering North Somerset, our aim is simple; to find loving and supportive homes for North Somerset’s children and young people, when they may not be able to live with their families. As a not-for-profit, all investment goes into supporting our children and ensuring they have the opportunities that other children have.

Our team is made up of dedicated and caring professionals, and we are fortunate enough to have a network of amazing foster carers who open their homes and provide amazing support and care for our children and young people. Our foster carers and team work hard to facilitate the best outcomes for our young people, and we are extremely passionate about North Somerset’s children and young people.

Our Mission

We strive to achieve the best outcomes for the children and young people of North Somerset, helping them to achieve everything they are capable of, and more.

Our Children

We are dedicated to supporting our children and young people and no two are the same. Some of our children may be waiting for an adoptive home as moving back with their families might not be possible. Some might require fostering on a long-term basis as adoption isn’t in their best interest. Some might require fostering for a few days or months whilst decisions and arrangements about their care are being made. And some might need somewhere to call home until they reach an age of independence.

No two are the same, but our children and young people all require one key thing – a safe place to call Home.

A message from our Head of Corporate Parenting

A few words from Karl Knill

Fostering North Somerset aim for all our fostered children to live with our foster families in local homes. There continues to be a growing need for foster families to support our children and young people, we want you to help us change this. Many of our children and young people aspire to be part of a family, provided with love and nurture which will enable them to feel safe – even if their words or behaviours might say differently sometimes, we know that this is ultimately what every child wants and deserves. We want all our children and young people to reach their potential, and many achieve great things like attending university, college, or pursuing hobbies leading to careers. Some young people’s achievements are simply staying healthy and managing their emotional and mental well-being. Foster families play a crucial role in helping grow and develop our children and young people, sometimes just by being there as someone who cares. We seek caring individuals with the space, time, and energy to be part of our fostering family.

We want our carers to see their role as a vocation, supported by our fostering allowances and additional benefits. In addition, we are champions of the Mockingbird project which we have pioneered for some years now, North Somerset being one of the first local authorities to utilise this method of support for our carers. We take great pride in supporting our foster carers and becoming part of a mockingbird constellation offers support to both carers and children, enabling stability and continuity.

To support you on your fostering journey you will have your own social worker who will communicate with you regularly and will visit you in your home as part of their role. You will be provided with a Skills Development Plan which will aid your training needs and enhance the skills required to foster.

North Somerset Council are proudly part of Fostering South West, the combined voice of local council foster care across our region. Our goal is to welcome more people into the rewarding journey of foster care and improve outcomes for the children and young people we support. Please come and join us, we are always looking for new foster carers who want to open up their hearts and their homes to our vulnerable children. I am proud to be working for North Somerset and appreciate everything that our carers do for the children and young people in their care, they make a huge difference to children’s lives on a daily basis, could you do that?
