“My parents have been fostering since I was 7, and I am now 15. In the past 8 years, we have had over 30 placements. It is difficult to predict how fostering will affect a birth child. Placing a stranger into anyone’s home has to potential to cause resentment or animosity, but it also makes it possible for anyone involved to develop great empathy for someone who has had to live in a broken home.
It’s easy to read about horrendous situations/experiences, but actually coming into contact with someone who has had to live through them makes it a lot more realistic.
In my own experience, I have found that fostering has enabled me to have a unique insight into other people’s hardships, which has in turn helped my sympathy towards others to thrive. Fostering also sparked my passion for psychology and mental health, and I hope to pursue a job in the mental health sector when I am older.
Overall, fostering has had a massive impact on my life, and has shaped me to be the person I am today.”
